Silent Hill: Townfall Frame Generation: Options & Limits
Townfall has no native frame-generation toggle in the tested PC release. Separate DLSS/FSR upscaling, NVIDIA Smooth Motion and unverified mod claims.
Quick answer
The tested PC launch build has no in-game frame-generation option. TechPowerUp’s September 24 test of the public Steam build confirms this, alongside repeated player reports. DLSS and FSR in the Upscaler menu do not mean DLSS or FSR Frame Generation is enabled. NVIDIA Smooth Motion is a separate driver option for supported RTX 40/50 hardware; configuration mods are not an official Townfall setting.

Why the DLSS or FSR menu does not show frame generation
In Display Options, the published PC menu has Upscaler and Upscaler Quality Mode, followed by Vsync, Frame Rate Limit and NVIDIA Reflex. There is no separate frame-generation row. TechPowerUp also reports finding AMD’s interpolation library in the game files without a corresponding menu setting. A bundled DLL alone does not establish an enabled feature.
This describes the public Steam release tested by the reviewer, not a promise about later patches. The official September 24 performance-update notice has no release date or feature list confirming that frame generation will be added.
Choose the option that matches what you want to change
These names refer to different controls. Check which one a guide is describing before looking for it inside Townfall.
| Option | Where it is configured | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| DLSS / FSR / TSR upscaling | Townfall Display Options | Renders and reconstructs the image; not proof of native frame generation. |
| Native DLSS / FSR Frame Generation | Would require game integration | No toggle in the tested launch build. |
| NVIDIA Smooth Motion | NVIDIA app driver settings | Driver interpolation on supported hardware; Townfall results are community reports. |
| Engine.ini or replacement-DLL mods | Third-party configuration/files | Experimental claims, with no verified universal Townfall outcome here. |
Try NVIDIA Smooth Motion only if your setup supports it
NVIDIA documents Smooth Motion for GeForce RTX 40 and 50 Series with supported app and driver versions. It works at the driver level, so it does not add a native DLSS Frame Generation switch to Townfall. Its documented configuration is:
- Open NVIDIA app, then Graphics → Program settings, and select Townfall.
- Scroll to Driver Settings and enable Smooth Motion for this game. Keep the original value so you can restore it.
- Launch Townfall and compare the same scene with the feature off and on. Check motion, input feel and HUD edges as well as the FPS counter.
- Switch Smooth Motion off again if the result looks or feels worse.
If the NVIDIA app entry has no effect
A Townfall player reports that the relevant process in their Steam installation was Townfall-Win64-Shipping.exe, inside Townfall/Binaries/Win64 beneath the installation folder. Selecting only the launcher did not work for that player. Check the executable in your own installation when choosing the program; do not assume every storefront uses the same folder layout.
That report also notes HUD distortion. Other replies describe improved motion, but these are community observations rather than our own benchmark. A higher displayed frame rate does not establish that the original hitch or input delay has been fixed.
Replacing an FSR DLL does not prove frame generation is working
A September 24 player reports replacing an FSR DLL and still being unable to enable frame generation. That is consistent with the missing menu, but does not verify any particular mod’s compatibility. An upscaler version, an interpolation library and a working game integration are different things.
We have not validated an Engine.ini recipe, DLL replacement or injected frame-generation setup for this release. If an experiment causes new problems, use that mod’s documented removal steps and restore your backed-up originals before testing again. Do not combine several unrelated tweaks and then attribute the result to one of them.
If the real problem is stuttering
Start with the existing PC troubleshooting sequence and compare a repeatable scene. The official performance update remains a separate piece of work; neither a Smooth Motion toggle nor a mod is evidence that it has shipped. Keep your platform, game version, driver, settings and a short capture for a useful issue report.
Common questions
Does choosing DLSS automatically enable frame generation?
No. The launch menu’s DLSS choice is an upscaling option. The tested game does not expose a native frame-generation toggle.
Will the announced performance patch add frame generation?
The checked official notice does not confirm that feature or a release date. Wait for a published patch note before treating it as added.
Are the NVIDIA instructions also AMD or Intel instructions?
No. Smooth Motion is an NVIDIA driver feature. This page does not claim a verified AMD or Intel Townfall frame-generation setup.
