Silent Hill: Townfall Difficulty Settings and Puzzle Hints
Choose Story, Normal or Nightmare combat separately from Normal or Hinted puzzles. Learn where to change settings and what this means for trophies.
Quick answer
Silent Hill: Townfall separates enemy difficulty from puzzle assistance. In Game Options, Difficulty offers Story Mode, Normal and Nightmare, while Puzzle Difficulty offers Normal and Hinted. You can change both during a playthrough. To make fights easier without adding puzzle clues, choose Story Mode and leave Puzzle Difficulty on Normal.

Change the setting that matches the problem
Open the game’s settings and select the Game Options tab. Find Difficulty for enemy encounters or Puzzle Difficulty for clue assistance. Change the relevant row, then return to your game. The menu descriptions explicitly allow adjustments at any time; you do not need to commit to the original combination for the whole playthrough.
If the obstacle is surviving an encounter, start with the enemy setting. If you can survive but cannot interpret a document, change puzzle assistance instead. Adjusting one row at a time makes it easier to judge whether the change addresses what was frustrating you.
Story Mode, Normal and Nightmare
Story Mode reduces enemy numbers, health and damage. Normal is the middle option. Nightmare increases the challenge and makes the flashlight detectable by enemies, as both the published difficulty guide and TechRadar’s review describe. This is a useful distinction when comparing difficulty advice about moving through dark areas.
For a first attempt, pick the experience you want rather than treating a higher setting as a requirement. Story Mode is a reasonable choice if repeated fights are interrupting your interest in exploring. Lowering difficulty is not a documented way to bypass a locked route or solve a puzzle.
Normal versus Hinted puzzles
Normal leaves the extra clue highlighting off. Hinted highlights inventory items and documents relevant to the current puzzle, and uses red text to draw attention to key information. It is the puzzle-help option, rather than an additional harder puzzle tier.
Try Hinted before opening a complete solution if you still want to work out the answer yourself. Revisit your inventory and read the relevant document after switching; merely changing the setting is less useful if you do not look again at the information it identifies.
Do easier settings block trophies?
PowerPyx’s September 21 trophy roadmap reports no difficulty-related trophies and says Story Mode with Hinted puzzles can be used for all trophies. GameRant’s difficulty guide agrees. This concerns the difficulty choice only: individual trophy conditions still apply, so an easier setting does not automatically earn every trophy.
These details reflect the launch-period menu screenshots and September 21–22 coverage checked for this guide. If a later update changes the menu description, follow the wording in your installed version.
Common questions
Can I keep hard fights but get puzzle help?
Yes. Set the enemy Difficulty independently and choose Hinted under Puzzle Difficulty. You can also use Story Mode with Normal puzzles for the opposite combination.
Is there a Hard puzzle setting?
The verified launch menu lists Normal and Hinted for puzzles. Nightmare belongs to the separate enemy Difficulty row.
